Crinum Care & Cultivation

Crinum Lilies are an elegant addition to any landscape and are particularly suited to zones 8-11. The Elizabeth Traub crinum is a magnificent rich fuchsia pink that has extra tall flower scapes reaching 3 to 5 feet tall. Flowers easily tower over the foliage. The fragrant funnel shaped flowers grow to 4 inches long and are borne on leafless stalks in clusters of 6 to 10 throughout the summer. Blooming begins in June and continues throughout August.

The Elizabeth Traub is a special hybrid bred to bloom taller, longer, fuller, and with larger blossoms than any of its close cousins that look similar. The Peppermint Crinum is a slower growing variety and produces flowers from smaller bulbs. It is also called the Milk & Wine Lily or the Stars & Stripes.

Crinum bulbs can be as large as 7 inches in diameter, but often start blooming when they are a mere 3″ across. Plant crinum bulbs fairly deep with the neck just a little above ground level. If the bulb has a really long neck, bury half of it. Crinums like fertile, humus-rich moist soil and as such do well in our climate in large containers on the patio. It does well in full sun or partial shade, but produces more flowers in full sun.

They like well drained soils. Water freely during the flowering season. Bulbs can be divided every 3 to 5 years, as they multiply rapidly. A bit of trivia: the word “crinum” is pronounced with a long “i” sound.
