Native to Malaysia and Indonesia, Malay Apple grows throughout Southeast Asia's lowlands and forests. The Malay Apple is a perennial evergreen that bears edible pear shaped, red or rose-red fruits up to 4" in length. The fruits are not part of the apple family, but have a crisp, sweet, white, apple-like flesh with a hint of rose essence. Fruits are mildly flavored and lack tartness.

Malay apple can reach 50' height in ideal conditions.
Where it was introduced into Hawaii, it grows at low elevations in wet to moderately wet valleys, mostly as an understory tree in coastal forests. It requires high humidity, high rainfall, and no frost.

Under ideal conditions, Malay apples have 2 fruiting seasons:  May to July and November to December.  Red to hot pink flowers in January, turn into fruits in late May to July.

Various parts of the plant were used by the ancient Polynesians for medicinal purposes, as well as for dye, and carpentry.
