Nectarines:   Do I Really Want One?

Nectarines are a funny kind of peach.

  • How do you tell a nectarine from a peach?
Easy:  nectarines have a shiny, waxy, smooth skin and peaches are fuzzy all over.
  • And nectarines taste, well, distinctly nectarine-ish! Not really scientific we know, but nectarines have their own distinct flavor.
  • Nectarines are self-fertile, meaning it only takes one tree to get fruit.
There's no need for a second tree for a pollinator.
  • They flower in February and March, producing plump, juicy fruit from late April throughout the month of May (for Florida).
  • You can expect your new 7g tree to begin to fruit the first spring after planting.  For more fruit sooner, we have super 7g & 15g trees available: see below.
  • Nectarine varieties have a little more geographical range than peaches and as such are not quite as finicky.

IFAS chill hours map

Flavor and sweetness of your nectarine is determined more by how you feed your tree --- or not --- than it is by cultivar.   Use the different cultivars to extend your harvest season.

All the varieties listed below were developed by IFAS
especially for this area of North Florida & Central Florida:  zones 8a, 8b, 9a, & 9b
(see descriptions for zone limitations)

SUNRAYCER

SunRaycer  is a very early, quite flavorful, hardy nectarine recommended for most of Florida.  It has a large growing zone and fruits from north of the GA border down to about SR60.

Fruit is medium to large in size. Developed by IFAS especially for Gainesville.
mature height approx 15'.
semi-freestone

Ripens early May

chill hours:  225-250

for zones 8b, 9a, 9b

SUNDOLLAR

SunDollar  is a medium to large sized nectarine, quite similar to the SunRaycer.

With a higher chill hour requirement, it is well suited to zone 8b.   Plant also in zone 9a to insure fruit whenever we get a really cold winter, and to extend the harvest season longer.

mature height approx 15'.
semi-clingstone

Ripens mid to late May

chill hours:  350-400

for zones 8a, 8b, 9a

SUNHOME

SunHome   is the only nectarine to have such beautiful dark red foliage in the early spring, for 4-6wks. Named for its ornamental red foliage, and bred (by IFAS) especially for the home gardener.  12-14' tall.

Fruits are almost entirely red blushed.
semi-freestone

Ripens mid- May

chill hours:  250-300

for zones 8a, 8b, 9a

SUNMIST

SunMist is a large, white flesh nectarine with very low acid content, making it one of the sweetest.  You'll think you're eating GA peaches!

Vigorous growing tree with a spreading habit, 12-18' tall.  Highly resistant to disease.
semi-freestone

Ripens late Apr to mid May

chill hours:  ~300
