Cherilata
cherimoya x custard apple
A. cherimola x A. reticulata
Annona cherilata
Painter
'Painter' is the first named cross of custard apple and cherimoya, creating a new variety appropriately dubbed 'cherilata'.
John Painter, an avid annona grower from Pine Island, FL with a vision for possibilities used pollen from a grafted 'Tikal' Custard Apple (A. reticulata) to pollinate a seedling 'Spain' Cherimoya (A. cherimola).
One tree survived well and 20 years later in 2020, Annona Breeding Project released it to the public marketplace.

Cherilata 'Painter'

Painter fruits are pinkish-red inside w/ berry-like flavors
Painter is a vigorous growing, hardy annona that is doing well in South Florida. Grafted to pond apple, it tolerates wet feet as well as drought conditions -- quite unusual!
Painter fruits are a deep red exterior with a rich pinkish-red interior. Sweet, juicy red fruits have a creamy flesh, rich with berry-flavored undertones.
Trees are highly productive.
Fruits ripen off season from other annona: October thru early April in South Florida.
